IRS Warns Tax Professionals of Ransomware Attacks

As part of its “Don’t Take the Bait” campaign, the IRS has issued a news release warning tax professionals of ransomware attacks. These attacks are on the rise worldwide, and the IRS is aware of a handful of practitioners who have been victims. The IRS urges practitioners to take the time to understand ransomware threats and protect themselves accordingly. To assist in this effort, the IRS has published a collection of tips for practitioners, businesses, payroll departments, human resource organizations, and taxpayers to prevent ransomware attacks. Among other things, practitioners should ensure that security patches are installed on operating systems, antivirus and anti-malware solutions are installed and set to automatically update, and software restriction policies are implemented. Also, victims of ransomware attacks should never pay a ransom—doing so would further encourage the behavior. N
